For a just in case situation I am keeping this 20 years old fan,
and I use it every summer
I will keep the old duvet, even though I have bought a new one, because you never know - just in case...
I will keep the old shoes, even though I have bought a new pair, because you never know - just in case...
I will keep the old plastic bowl, even though I have bought a new one, because you never know - just in case...
I will keep EVERYTHING, because you never know - just in case...
This post is about - well, 'just in case', and that expression - or feeling is the cause of a lot of clutter, because we keep stuff for occasions, which we really haven't thought through. Of course, we keep things for Christmas, Easter and other holidays. But what about all the other stuff?
Some of the things we keep, we keep for visitors, because we want to be good hosts, who can make guests feel welcome.
But we don't need to be perfect. To be a good host doesn't mean that you own everything and can deliver everything. No guest will expect to be treated as in a 5 star hotel. If I am a guest in somebody's home, I am grateful, that someone will open his/her home to me. Being together is what counts.
Go through your stuff and find the things you keep for 'just in case' you get visitors and find out, when you have used them. If it is more than a year ago, you should let them go and use the space for things, you use more often.
The problem is, that we never take the time to find out, what we really need 'just in case'. If you are totally down to earth it probably food, band aid and painkillers?
Everything else can be helped by what we already have, and we shouldn't build our homes on situations, which happens once or twice a year - or even never!
